BikePlants Public Art Installation
In 2010, Scott Eunson and Marianne Lovink were the winning Artist Team in a City of Toronto open competition to design and fabricate a large series of “Artist-Designed Bicycle Lock-Ups” for a new Hydro and Rail Corridor Pathway System. The “Bike Plants” designs were inspired by the fascinating variety and complexity of patterns found in the natural world. As an installation, the pieces were conceived as visual markers for the trails as well as durable and functional pieces of street furniture.
120 Bike stands were created within the project budget, more than needed in the original scope. The extras were installed in various other city locations such as the Evergreen Brickworks, the Toronto Botanical Gardens, and the Belt Line trail.
The materiality and forms were so successful, new BikePlants are still being created, with over 200 pieces installed and a large library of potential forms ready to suit any project. See the BikePlants page for more info.
